ICOR was awarded the BC Hydro Community Champion Award for 2009 on April 22nd, 2010.  We are proud to receive this recognition from BC Hydro which was presented to us at Lake Hill Elementary School by Ted Olynyk, Manager, Community Relations, BC Hydro.  ICOR received this award for its Invasive Species/Habitat Restoration Project which ran during the summer of 2009. The money awarded from BC Hydro will be used to support the running of this summer's Invasive Species/Habitat Restoration Project. We thank BC Hydro and Lake Hill Elementary for their support. 

 

Dr. Ken Denman, Research Scientist at the Canadian Centre for Climate Modelling and Analysis, Meteorological Service of Canada and ICOR member was the guest host for ICOR's Food For Thought Lunchtime discussion series on Tuesday, April 20, 2010.  Dr. Denman's topic was Ocean Acidification, Marine Ecosystems, and Geoengineering of our Climate.  Over 60 people attended this informative session with Dr. Denman.  ICOR thanks Dr. Denman for his support and for the interesting discussion about this important topic.

ICOR was honored to co-host with Genome BC a seminar presented by Professor Brian Wynne, Associate Director of (CESAGen) Centre for Economic and Social Aspects of Genomics at Lancaster University, UK. Dr. Wynne's seminar was entitled "Climates, Coasts and Genomes: How do we put the social into science for sustainability?"  This seminar was held on Wednesday, April 14, 2010.

On Tuesday, April 13, 2010 ICOR was delighted to co-host with the Department of Geography Ms. Camilla Brattland's seminar Coastal Sami Communities on the National Agenda. Indigenous Fishing Rights Processes in Norway. Ms. Brattland is a PhD candidate from the University of Tromsø, Norway.

Dr. Peter S. Ross was the host for ICOR's Food For Thought lunchtime discussion series on March 16, 2010.  Dr. Ross talked about British Columbia's killer whales as indicators of global pollution.  We feel very privileged that Dr. Ross was our guest host for this interesting and well attended discussion. Thank you Dr. Ross!

Dr. Martin Taylor was guest host for the ICOR'S Food For Thought lunchtime discussion series on February 16, 2010.  Dr. Taylor spoke about Ocean Networks Canada: Progress and Plans.  ICOR was honored to have Dr. Taylor as our guest host and we thank him for a very informative and interesting discussion.

On Wednesday, January 27, 2010, ICOR and the Office of the Dean, Faculty of Fine Arts co-sponsored the seminar entitled: "The Perfect Storm: Ocean and Coastal Research Meets the Fine Arts".  It was presented by Dr. Sarah Blackstone, Dean, Faculty of Fine Arts. 

ICOR'S FOOD FOR THOUGHT first lunchtime discussion series was held on Tuesday, January 19th, 2010 in the Senate and Board Chambers located at the University Centre Building.   Dr. Phil Dearden was the guest host who addressed the very important question Do We Need Marine Protected Areas? There were 30 people in attendance who enjoyed Phil's engaging presentation and lively discussion.

On Thursday, January 14, 2010, ICOR and IESVic co-sponsored a seminar.  The speaker was Clayton Hiles, an MASc candidate from the Department of Mechanical Engineering and IESVic Graduate Research Assistant who spoke about Integration of Wave Energy into Off-Grid Energy Systems: A Case Study for Hot Springs Cove, BC.

ICOR sponsored a seminar by Dr. John Grace, from the University of British Columbia, Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering and Clean Energy Research Centre on October 29, 2009.  His topic was Assessing the Opportunities and Challenges for Gas Hydrates in Canada.

ICOR and the Department of Geography co-sponsored a seminar by Dr. Tundi Agardy, Executive Director, Sound Seas, Washington DC, on September 30, 2009.  Dr. Agardy`s topic was The Science of Ocean Zoning: Information Needs and Data Limitations.
